My 98 had a really nice speedo buzz going after I repainted the tank. Pop your tank off the frame and look up into the tunnel between the speedo housing and rear mount. You may find the same section of rubbed off paint I did. Silicone gasket goop, shoe glue, caulk or whatever between the tank and the cable cured mine, may work on yours.
